Blue Light Exposure May Help Heal Minor Traumatic Brain Injury

By Jose Ceja

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) account for approximately 30 percent of all injury deaths in the United States. Luckily, research out of the University of Arizona has shown that blue light exposure therapy may help in the healing of individuals who have suffered from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

What Causes mTBI?

Mild traumatic brain injury, commonly referred to as concussion, often results from incidents such as falls, contact sports, and car accidents. Mild traumatic brain injury is often accompanied by a variety of symptoms including:

  • Headaches
  • Sleep issues
  • Attention difficulties
  • Brain fog
  • Loss of consciousness

The Connection Between mTBI and Sleep

Research shows that the brain can repair itself during sleep. Approximately half of those who suffer from a mTBI suffer from sleep issues. That’s why it was important for professors from the Department of Psychiatry at the College of Medicine in Tucson to research whether the improvement of sleep could hasten the recovery process.

The College conducted a randomized clinical trial of adults who had suffered mTBI. Some of the participants were given a cube-shaped device that would shine bright blue light at them for 30 minutes in the morning, while the remainder was given a cube-shaped device that would shine bright amber light.

Blue Light Corrects Circadian Rhythm

The study showed that the blue light corrected circadian rhythm, leading to better sleep and subsequent brain repair. This is because blue light suppresses melatonin production, which is a chemical that helps the brain to sleep. By being exposed to blue light in the morning, the melatonin will start earlier in the evening, leading to better sleep. The blue light exposure also reduced daytime drowsiness and improved cognition and alertness.

It is clear from the study that exposure to blue light, when done in a certain manner at a certain time of day, can aid in recovery from a mTBI. Further research is being conducted.
