Slip and Fall Accidents Can Lead to Serious Brain Injuries

By Jose Ceja

When most of us think of a slip and fall accident, we often picture scrapes, cuts, and bruises. We imagine that a bag of ice and an elevated leg will cure the problem. But what many don’t realize is that slip and fall accidents can often cause injuries much more severe than can be tended to at home. In fact, slip and fall accidents can even result in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that can impact you (and your loved ones) for the rest of your life.

What is a TBI?

A traumatic brain injury is a serious injury that can occur when the brain strikes the skull. This causes damage to your brain tissue. TBIs often occur in an accident in which there has been direct trauma to the head. Sometimes when an individual slips and falls, they may land on their head or hit their head on the way down. Since we can’t always control the way in which we land in a fall, TBI is not an uncommon occurrence in these falls.

TBI Can Cause Much Damage

TBIs can greatly vary in severity, with some people suffering from minor concussions to others suffering permanent brain damage. Depending upon the severity and location of the part of the brain that has been hit, you can suffer from a variety of common side effects as a result of your injury. These include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Difficulty understanding or communicating
  • Difficulty following basic instructions
  • Slurred speech
  • Agitation
  • Difficulty with balance and coordination
  • Disorientation and/or confusion
  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Difficulty with memory
  • Unconsciousness or coma
  • Severe changes in personality or emotions

Regardless of whether your injuries and symptoms are minor or quite severe, they can always have a significant impact on your life.

Since these injuries are internal, you could be suffering from a serious TBI without even knowing. That’s why it’s so important that you seek immediate medical attention after any accident in which you hit your head on anything. Since symptoms from these injuries are often delayed, you can avoid further serious complications by receiving treatment.
